The short answer
Hire an SEO agency if your goal is ranking campaigns: climbing Google's results for many product or location keywords, building links, and growing clicks from the classic list of results.
Hire an AEO agency if your customers research before they buy and increasingly ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews, and you need your business named in those answers, accurately, in the languages your customers use.
Many businesses need both eventually. The question is which problem is costing you more today.
AEO agency vs SEO agency, side by side
| SEO agency | AEO agency | |
|---|---|---|
| Main goal | Rank pages in search results | Be named and cited in AI answers |
| Where results show | Google and Bing's list of links | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| Typical work | Keyword targeting, link building, on-page and technical SEO | Entity clarity, structured data, answer-first content, corroboration, AI-readable websites |
| Unit of success | A ranking position for a keyword | A mention or citation for a question |
| How it's measured | Rankings, Search Console clicks and impressions | A fixed set of questions asked on each AI platform over time, plus Search Console |
| Biggest risk | Ranking for terms that don't convert | Being described wrongly, or recommended less than a competitor |
| Best fit | Businesses chosen from a list of links: e-commerce, local services, high-volume searches | Businesses chosen after research: healthcare, real estate, education, finance, B2B, specialist services |
When an SEO agency is the better choice
Be honest about what you need. An SEO agency is usually the better fit if:
You sell many products or serve many locations and need hundreds of category or location pages to rank. Your buyers click the first results and buy quickly, without much research. You mainly need links and rankings for competitive commercial keywords.
NoorRank doesn't sell standalone SEO, so if that is what you need, we will tell you on the first call rather than sell you something else.
When you need an AEO agency
Your customers ask AI before they choose. If buyers compare options, read reviews or ask around first, AI answers are now part of that research.
AI gets your business wrong. It confuses you with a company of the same name, states old prices or locations, or doesn't know you exist.
Competitors are named and you aren't. Ask ChatGPT the question your best customer would ask, without your brand name in it, and see who it recommends.
You operate in more than one language. AI answers in Arabic can differ from answers in English, and need separate work.
Can one agency do both?
Some can, but check what is actually included. Good AEO work always includes the technical SEO it depends on: crawlable pages, correct canonical URLs, structured data and speed. That is different from running full SEO campaigns, such as link building or ranking hundreds of keywords.
At NoorRank, technical SEO is part of every AEO, GEO and website project. Standalone SEO campaigns are not something we sell. For the concepts behind the labels, read AEO vs SEO vs GEO.
Six questions to ask any AEO agency
Which questions will you track, and will they stay fixed?
Results only mean something if the same questions are asked the same way each time. Changing them between reports hides what is really happening.
How do you test?
Look for logged-out, clean sessions, on each platform separately, with every result dated. One screenshot proves very little.
Will you show me drops as well as wins?
AI answers move both ways. An agency that only reports good news isn't measuring properly.
What technical work is included?
If AI crawlers can't read your site, nothing else works. Ask exactly which fixes are in scope.
How do you handle Arabic?
For UAE and GCC businesses, Arabic answers need their own testing and content, not a translated English report.
Do you guarantee results?
The right answer is no. Nobody controls AI answers, and guarantees are a warning sign.
Red flags
“We guarantee #1 in ChatGPT”
AI answers change by session, location and date. Nobody can guarantee them.
Screenshot-only reporting
A single good screenshot can be cherry-picked. Ask for the full, dated question log.
Mass AI-written content
Hundreds of thin pages don't make you more citable, and can hurt your Google rankings.
“llms.txt is all you need”
llms.txt is a useful courtesy file, not a ranking switch. Google has said it doesn't use it. See llms.txt explained.
Secret methods
Good AEO is explainable. If an agency can't tell you what it will change and why, be cautious.
No proof of their own
Ask what the agency has achieved for itself. We published our own experiment, failures included: the Miracle Berry case study.
AEO vs SEO agencies: common questions
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. AI tools that search the web lean on pages that are indexed and technically sound, so SEO foundations still matter. What has changed is that ranking is no longer the only outcome that counts: being named in the answer now matters too.
Is an AEO agency more expensive than an SEO agency?
Not by definition. Cost depends on scope: the number of pages and languages, technical fixes, content and off-site work. Compare what is included and how results are measured, not the label.
Can I hire an SEO agency and an AEO agency together?
Yes, if their roles are clear. Agree who owns the technical setup and structured data, so the two don't undo each other's work.
How do I check if an agency really knows AEO?
Ask for their method, their question set, and their own results, including what didn't work. A real AEO agency can explain exactly how it measures AI visibility.
Does NoorRank offer SEO?
Not as a standalone service. We do AEO, GEO and AEO-ready website development, and the technical SEO those depend on is included.
