What is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization, explained for UAE businesses

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is how a business gets named in the answers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews give. Here is how it works.

    In short

AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, is the work of getting your business named and cited in the answers AI tools write, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews. It builds on SEO, but the goal is different: not a ranking in a list of links, but a place inside the answer itself.

Not the customs programme. In the UAE, ‘AEO’ also means the Authorised Economic Operator programme run by customs authorities. This guide is about Answer Engine Optimization, a marketing discipline. The two are unrelated.

    What an answer engine is

A search engine gives you a list of pages and lets you choose. An answer engine reads those pages for you and writes one answer. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Copilot all work this way, and Google now does the same at the top of many results pages with AI Overviews and AI Mode.

That changes what ‘being found’ means. If someone asks ‘which clinics in Dubai do a full body health check?’, the answer names a handful of businesses. If yours isn't one of them, there is often no list of links to fall back on. The buyer reads the answer and moves on.

    What AEO actually involves

Answer engines decide who to name by reading sources they trust and checking that the facts agree. AEO works on each of those inputs:

    • Machine-readable website. Pages that a crawler can read without running JavaScript, with clear headings, direct answers near the top, and structured data that states what the business is, where it operates and what it offers.
    • A clear entity. AI systems think in entities: a specific business, with a name, a location, services and relationships. If your name is also a common word, or another company shares it, AEO includes the disambiguation work so the AI doesn't confuse you.
    • Corroboration. Answer engines are more confident when independent sources say the same thing about you: directories, press, industry lists, reviews and profiles. Consistent facts across those sources matter as much as your own site.
    • Content that answers real questions. Pages built around the questions buyers actually ask, in the words they use, so there is something specific to quote.
    • Measurement. Asking the same fixed set of questions on each platform over time, and recording what comes back, because AI answers change by session, date and location.

AEO vs SEO: what's the difference?

SEO aims to rank your pages in a list of results. AEO aims to get your business named inside the answer. The two overlap heavily: AI tools that search the web lean on pages that already rank and on sites that are technically sound. So AEO doesn't replace SEO. It changes what you optimise for. There is a fuller comparison in AEO vs SEO vs GEO.

Why it matters in the UAE

Two things make AEO more pressing here. First, the UAE is a research-heavy market for high-value decisions: healthcare, property, education, finance and professional services, where buyers compare before they commit. Second, people search in English and Arabic, and an assistant's Arabic answer can draw on different sources from its English one. A business that is visible in one language can be missing in the other.

    How long does AEO take?

There is no fixed timeline, and anyone who promises one is guessing. In our own published experiment, the Miracle Berry Protocol, a brand-new domain was cited by ChatGPT on day 9 and recognised by Perplexity on day 17. Perplexity then dropped it on day 19 and picked it up again on day 20, and Claude never recognised it within the 21 days. That was one domain in one category, so treat it as evidence that it can happen quickly, not as a schedule.

The more useful lesson from that experiment: recognition followed independent references to the entity, not the volume of content published. That is why corroboration is part of AEO and not an optional extra.

    Can you do AEO yourself?

Much of it, yes. Start with these five steps:

    1. Write down the 20 questions your best customers ask before they buy, in their words, in each language you sell in.
    2. Ask each of them to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google, logged out, and record who gets named. That is your baseline.
    3. Check that your site works with JavaScript turned off, and that every important page has its own title, description and canonical URL.
    4. Add structured data for your organisation, services and locations. See schema markup for AI search.
    5. Make your core facts (name, what you do, where, since when) identical everywhere they appear: your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories.

Where an agency helps is in the parts that need repetition and judgement: running and logging the questions properly, fixing technical issues, and earning the third-party mentions that answer engines check.

    Questions people ask

    What does AEO stand for?

In marketing, AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization: getting a business named in the answers AI tools give. In UAE trade and customs, AEO also stands for Authorised Economic Operator, an unrelated certification programme.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They overlap almost completely. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is a term from academic research for the same goal: appearing in AI-generated answers. Some agencies use the terms interchangeably. See AEO vs SEO vs GEO.

    Does AEO replace SEO?

No. AI tools that search the web rely on pages that rank and sites that are technically sound, so SEO is the foundation AEO is built on.

Which AI platforms does AEO cover?

Any tool that writes answers from web sources: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. Each behaves differently, so they are measured separately.
