How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT

ChatGPT names businesses it can find, read and verify. Seven practical steps to get yours into its answers, and what not to waste money on.

    In short

ChatGPT recommends businesses it can find in a web search, read clearly, and see confirmed by independent sources. To get named, make sure its crawler can reach your site, state your core facts plainly on your own pages, keep those facts identical across the web, and earn mentions on the sites it checks.

How ChatGPT decides who to name

When a question needs current or local information, ChatGPT searches the web, reads a set of pages and writes an answer from them. For other questions it answers from what it learned in training. Either way, it can only name businesses it has come across, and it is more confident naming ones that several sources agree about.

So getting recommended is less about tricks and more about three things: being findable, being readable, and being corroborated.

    Seven steps that actually help

    1. Let OpenAI's search crawler in

OpenAI runs separate crawlers for separate jobs. OAI-SearchBot finds pages for ChatGPT's search answers; GPTBot collects data for training. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Check your robots.txt allows it. Blocking GPTBot is a separate decision about training and doesn't affect search.

    2. Get indexed beyond Google

ChatGPT's search draws on third-party search providers as well as its own crawler. Submitting your sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools is free, takes ten minutes, and widens the set of indexes your pages can be found in.

    3. Make your site readable without JavaScript

Many AI crawlers read the HTML your server sends and don't run JavaScript. If your site builds its content in the browser, they may see an empty page. We found exactly this on our own site: it looked perfect in a browser, but every URL returned the same document to a crawler. Rendering each page to real HTML fixed it.

    4. State your core facts plainly

Put who you are, what you do, where, and for whom in plain sentences near the top of your key pages. ‘We are a physiotherapy clinic in Jumeirah treating sports injuries’ is easy to quote. ‘Elevating wellness journeys’ is not. Back it up with structured data: see schema markup for AI search.

    5. Answer the questions buyers ask

Write pages and FAQs around the real questions your customers ask before they buy, in their words and in each language you sell in. A page titled ‘How much does a full body check-up cost in Dubai?’ with a clear answer is far more quotable than a generic services page.

    6. Make the facts agree everywhere

Your name, address, phone, services and founding year should be identical on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and press mentions. Contradictions lower confidence. Even a founding year that differs between two of your own pages is the kind of conflict an AI may resolve by picking the wrong one, or by not naming you at all.

    7. Earn independent mentions

In our Miracle Berry experiment, ChatGPT recognised a brand-new entity on day 9, while independent references to it were being published elsewhere (five by day 10). Recognition tracked corroboration, not the amount of content on the site. In practice that means industry directories, ‘best of’ lists in your category, local press, podcasts and partner pages.

What not to waste money on

    • Mass-produced AI content. Hundreds of thin pages don't make you more citable, and they risk your Google rankings.
    • Anyone who guarantees a ChatGPT recommendation. Answers vary by session, location and date. Nobody controls them.
    • Paying for ‘AI listings’ on sites nobody reads. A mention helps when it comes from a source people and search engines already trust.

How to check where you stand

Write ten questions a customer would ask before choosing a business like yours, without your name in them. Ask each one in ChatGPT, logged out, and note who gets named. Repeat monthly with the same questions. Our guide on measuring AI visibility explains how to do this properly.

    Questions people ask

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

Not in its organic answers. Being named depends on what ChatGPT finds and trusts in its sources, which is why the work is about your site, your facts and your mentions.

How long does it take to appear in ChatGPT?

It varies widely. In our own experiment a new domain was cited on day 9, but that was one domain in one category. For most businesses, expect weeks for technical fixes to be picked up and months for corroboration to build.

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT recommending me?

No. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler. ChatGPT's search answers use OAI-SearchBot. Blocking OAI-SearchBot is what removes you from search answers.
